Here is a rare glimpse of the stone the hobbits erect on a hillside and build a garden around to commemorate the 19 fallen hobbits of the Battle of Bywater which occurs during 'The Scouring of the Shire' in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King.
Things to notice in this painting:
- In the foreground, we have a young hobbit couple in their 40s. They are, in fact, the same two hobbits we glimpsed as little children atop a weed-grown mound, witnessing the rescue of Lobelia from the Lockholes in S.R. 1419. The lad and lass have grown up and married, and have not forgotten the events which they saw as little ones.
- In the background, an 80-year-old Sam Gamgee continues to heal the Shire through gardening.
- In a way, both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are also present in this painting, symbolized by the two cypress trees Sam Gamgee has planted. They echo the trees the Bagginses cultivated in the door-yard of Bag End.
- The red poppies are my remembrance of J.R.R. Tolkien and his friends who found themselves caught up in the evils of the Great War.
- The white umbellifers are my symbol for Mrs. Edith Bratt Tolkien, who once danced among such flowers in a Yorkshire glade, and for all of the women of her generation who also had to endure war.
