“I am in fact a Hobbit (in all but size). I like gardens, trees and unmechanized farmlands; I smoke a pipe, and like good plain food…” - J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 213

In this portrait of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, we have the chance to celebrate the man, himself. Tolkien has been honored with many titles – the Author of the Century, the Father of Modern Fantasy, Merton Professor of English Literature and Language – but here we see him at his simple hobbit best, sitting under a great tree on a pleasant day, handsomely garbed in houndstooth and green waistcoat with golden buttons, and in the distance, the “hole in the ground” which arose in his thought with such clarity that it has become a cherished landmark in the minds of millions of readers. Tolkien, a tree, a green hill…it is an image that evokes peace, respect and love.

I have painted many portraits over the course of my career, but this one is deeply dear to me. It is a tribute to an author who has filled my life with wonder and joy since my earliest childhood and an homage to an artist of rare style and gifts. I wanted to make a special place for him in my own home, near my own Tolkien bookshelves, where I could be daily inspired by reflection on the life and work of this man who so loved the green world, and good food, and family, and friends, and faith. If Tolkien holds a strong place in your heart, this fine art print can become a touchstone in your home for the qualities you most prize in his writings, art, and example. I’ve met so many Tolkien fans and scholars who are keenly drawn to goodness and beauty, and the art we hang on our walls can surround us with what we love. I painted this portrait with heartfelt respect and love to thank this wonderful man for his inestimable contributions to my own life and to the lives of people all over the world. Thank you, Professor Tolkien!
