“All Hobbits had originally lived in holes in the ground, or so they believed, and in such dwellings they still felt most at home; but in the course of time they had been obliged to adopt other forms of abode. Actually in the Shire in Bilbo’s days it was, as a rule, only the richest and the poorest Hobbits that maintained the old custom.” - Prologue to The Lord of the Rings
What does it look like inside a hobbit hole? Museum-quality prints of this original painting are your invitation to come into Number 3 Bagshot Row in S.R. 1390 for tea with the Gamgee family. This cross-section view of their humble but comfortable smial celebrates the fact that even the smials of poor hobbits mean comfort.
Details you might like to notice:
Little Samwise Gamgee is just 10 years old in this picture; he is beautifying the family’s tea table with flowers.
Next to him is the baby of the family, Marigold, who has been picking strawberries to contribute to the meal.
May is carrying a tea tray featuring a large and hospitable teapot.
Daisy sits in a comfortable chair shelling spring peas.
Hamson sits on the hearth, admiring a sack of new taters the family has harvested, while Halfred comes in at the door with fresh carrots and a pail of cream; I don’t know if the Gamgees had their own cow, but perhaps the Widow Rumble grazed one on the roof of her smial along Bagshot Row.
Hamfast Gamgee (the Gaffer) is polishing his gardening fork, taking pride in the tools of his trade; the entire smial bears evidence of his famed green thumb, even to the ivy that has been trained to grow up over the rafters of the hole.
Hamfast’s wife, Bell Goodchild, prepares a hearty meal in the fireplace, mainly consisting of the produce of the family’s large front garden.
This very modest smial consists of the large sunny front room for living and dining, a pantry, three bedrooms, and a bath. While this does not compare to the luxuries of a great hole like Bag End, it shows how even the poor of the Shire live in comfort and dignity.
If you’ve always dreamed of getting to peek into a hobbit hole, this painting has lots of carefully-chosen details for you to enjoy. By hanging this print in your home, you’ll always have an invitation to visit the Gamgees. It’s a wonderful chance to think about the society and family life that produced Sam Gamgee, who many readers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium consider to be the true hero of The Lord of the Rings. Most of us long for a simple and peaceful good life, and the Shire can be a continuous source of inspiration for the way we want to live.
