Even before Gandalf launches his first firework at Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday party, we learn of a hobbit family called Gamgee. In this original fine art painting, a young Samwise and his brothers lovingly tend Gaffer Gamgee’s vegetable garden at Number 3 Bagshot Row. Bag End is glimpsed above, but it is here in the rich soil of the Hill that we find both the heart of hobbit culture and the character who I see as the real hero of The Lord of the Rings.
 
Sam Gamgee’s love and loyalty are an inspiration. Here, we see him as a young hobbit lad, and we know that scenes like this are all that he longs to return to throughout his incredible and perilous adventure, but in order to save the Shire and out of devotion to his master, Sam bids farewell to peace and plenty for the greater good. His sacrifice, hardihood and plain goodness are unforgettable.
