"...wardrobes (he had whole rooms devoted to clothes)..." - The Hobbit, Chapter 1: An Unexpected Party

You could wake up every morning to this sunny, relaxing picture of Mr. Bilbo Baggins in one of the many rooms devoted to his clothes in Bag End. The day is full of promise for this happy gentlehobbit, and this original, hand-done painting is filled with details of the hobbit lifestyle so wonderfully depicted by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Things to notice in this Tolkien-inspired art print:

    • This is Bilbo’s best wardrobe, on the window-side of the smial.

    • He has taken off a pair of slippers (like the ones his heir will one day wear in the house of Tom Bombadil) as well as a sumptuous banyan-style dressing gown.

    • His waistcoat is embroidered with bees and clover, memorializing the part of his adventure that took him to Beorn’s house; Bilbo is wearing this same garment at his eleventy-first birthday many years later.

    • Modish Georgian-style trousers reveal the pride hobbits take in showing off their feet, and one of the pair of silver brushes is for keeping Bilbo’s feet tidy, while the other is for his curly hair.

    • There is a bottle of scent on the table, perhaps from the Southfarthing, where luxuries are cultivated.

    • Bilbo has chosen a set of studs from the little treasure chest (they are not magic ones like those given to the Old Took by Gandalf, but they are quite handsome.)

    • Bilbo will complete his ensemble with an elegant green frock coat.

    • This wardrobe room is kept fresh with cut flowers, potted ivy, and dried lavender. The blue bachelor buttons in the vase hint at Bilbo’s status as a fine bachelor.

    • The green cloak hanging on a peg on the wall is the one Bilbo wore on his great adventure some years before this scene.

If you enjoy cosplay, and want to know what hobbits wear, a print of this painting could be a very useful reference. Tolkien’s own artwork shows us a well-to-do hobbit like Bilbo dressed in Georgian or Regency attire, and everything you need to consider is here, from Bilbo’s snowy-white stock, ample supply of fresh linen, and even gold buttons. I think that everyone deserves the dignity of a lovely sunny room like this for taking care of themselves, don’t you?
