“Wake now, my merry friends! Forget the nightly noises! Ring a ding dillo del! derry del, my hearties! If you come soon you’ll find breakfast on the table. If you come late you’ll get grass and rain-water!” - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 7: In the House of Tom Bombadil
After their frightful adventure in the Old Forest, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin experience delightful relief in the house of Tom Bombadil. How is it that Tom has a perfect little penthouse all ready for the arrival of his guests? I have always dreamt of that bright and cozy room with its soft beds, green mats, and rush-strewn floor. There is water everywhere in the ewers and basins, in the rain on the roof, and in Tom’s songs.
All throughout The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien so kindly balances times of hardship with periods of recovery. It is such a welcome thought to know our hobbits are safe in the house of an enigmatic Bombadil. This pacing allows us, as readers, to relax with the Fellowship, and remember why we so love Middle-earth.
This original fine art painting of Tom Bombadil and his house will be a bright and fresh focal point in any room of your home. You might even find yourself rhyming and singing while you look at it!
