“The last day of the year and the first of the next year were called the Yuledays...In full Yuletide was six days long, including the last three and the first three days of each year.” - The Lord of the Rings, Appendix D: The Calendars
In The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien treats us to a glimpse of Yule at Beorn's house, but how might the holiday have been celebrated in the Shire? Here, you're invited to Bag End in Sam and Rosie's day and prints of this original, hand-done painting are a veritable Who's-Who of the Cotton-Gamgee families.
Things to notice in this painting:
- For a complete list of all the hobbits shown, read my blog post, "Come for Yule at Bag End in 1427"
- Sam and Rosie eventually have 13 children, but in 1427, just Elanor, Frodo, Rose, and Merry have been born
- Pippin dances with Diamond of Long Cleeve and Merry with Estella Bolger, as old friends Fredegar Bolger and Folco Boffin cheer the couples dancing the Springle-ring
- Careful attention has been paid to keeping faithful to Tolkien's own renderings of Bag End, but also to attempt to resolve the problems of scale with which he wasn't satisfied in his own drawings
- The white dog leaping about with Sam and Rosie is the same one as seen in "Epilogue Number Two: Sam and Elanor"
Hanging seasonal art can help keep your dwelling place in tune with the round of the year, and I hope this scene of merriment adds warmth and happiness to your home.
