This famous scene on a misty September morn shows Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin passing out of the Brandybucks' private tunnel under the High Hay and into the dell below the Old Forest. Their adventure has really begun!
 
Things to notice in this painting:
 
It's very unusual that the Brandybucks have delved a tunnel into the Old Forest so that they can visit it from time to time, "when the fit takes them"; they even visit it at night! 
The four travelers ride Merry's fine hobbit ponies, and have an extra pony for carrying baggage.
The tunnel gate is marked with a "B" rune.
The hobbits pause as Merry announces, "You have left the Shire." Some readers see this as the real start of the great journey.
