“The spouse of Aulë is Yavanna, the Giver of Fruits. She is the lover of all things that grow in the earth, and all their countless forms she holds in her mind, from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould...in the form of a woman she is tall, and robed in green; but at times she takes other shapes.” - The Silmarillion, Valaquenta
Yavanna Kementári is the Giver of Fruits and great among the Queens of the Valar. She planted the first seeds in Arda, and here in the Green Hill Country of the Shire, it is harvest time. The hobbits are not actually seeing Yavanna, any more than most of us expect to see a personification of Mother Nature in our gardens, but this original, hand-done painting is my idea of how the Little Folk might have imagined this wonderful being who made their home a green land of plenty.
The blackbirds are in the ripe wheat fields, and apples and pears call the hobbits to harvest. This is a scene of the abundance of nature, and Shire-folk of all ages are enjoying it, from a gammer with her granddaughter in the flower garden of a small smial to a young hobbit farmer giving his sweetheart a cabbage to take home for her supper. It is only hoarding that stands in the way of all peoples in Middle-earth today getting to enjoy the fruits of the earth, as they surely have a right to do.
We know only a little about late Third-Age hobbits' understanding of the Valar. Frodo knows enough to recognize when elves are singing a hymn to Elbereth, and Bilbo spends his retirement in Rivendell, studying and translating elven lore which is centered in their personal history as the first-born children of Eru and the beloved of the Valar. I believe that any hobbit conception of a wondrous being like Yavanna would have been rooted in the Little Folk's joyous thanksgiving for food. I think they might have seen Yavanna as a kind mother who filled their plates with delicious things six times a day in good seasons.
Celebrate the bounty of nature and the beauty of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium by bringing home a print of this lovely scene.
