“On three sides the woods pressed upon it; but eastward the ground fell steeply and the tops of the dark trees, growing at the bottom of the slope, were below their feet. Beyond, the low lands lay dim and flat under the stars. Nearer at hand a few lights twinkled in the village of Woodhall." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 3: Three is Company

The village of Woodhall occupies a unique location at the edge of the Shire's great forest - the Woody End. While most hobbits lived in sunny spots on hills and plains, the residents of this community are woodsy hobbits - a concept I hope you find interesting. This is a landscape for dreaming about really being in the Shire and seeing the diverse and beautiful lay of the land all about you.

Though it is daylight in this painting, you can see that lights have already been kindled on the shadow-side of the hills. This landscape also depicts the scenario in which hobbits began building homes after they ran out of good delving sites; there are both smials and standalone dwellings here in the little valley. The houses are built of stone which has been left untreated instead of being limed like the cheerful abodes of Hobbiton. Use has been made of abundantly available local timber in the architecture, and the roofs are turfed, making these structures almost disappear within this special natural setting.

It's up to you to decide which of the wooded hills above is the one that Frodo, Sam, and Pippin stood on with Gildor Inglorion and his folk when they saw the twinkling lights of Woodhall below them. The presences of tarrying elves in the forest make this an especially enchanting locale. I think it would take special kinds of hobbits to choose this corner of the Eastfarthing for their settlement. I suspect that Fallohide ancestry was prominent in this community because it was this branch of hobbitry that most loved both elves and trees.

Many of my paintings inspired by Tolkien's legendarium are filled with bustling activity. If you are looking for a simpler, quieter landscape to help you dream about Middle-earth, why not bring home a museum-quality print of this unique region of the Shire?
