“'But what about these Tree-men, these giants, as you might call them? They do say that one bigger than a tree was seen up away beyond the North Moors not long back.'
'Who's they?'
'My cousin Hal for one. He works for Mr. Boffin at Overhill and goes up to the Northfarthing for the hunting. He saw one.'” - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 2: The Shadow of the Past
Do you believe that Sam Gamgee’s cousin Hal saw an Ent beyond the North Moors of the Shire? No one can say for sure, but I’ve always thought so, and there are few scenes in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring that are more inviting to the imagination.
Things to notice in this painting:
Hal looks out across the misty North Moors - a vast and lonesome region of the Shire.
He is there on a hunting trip, having taken a break from his work with Mr.Boffin at Overhill.
Hal claims that something like an elm tree came striding across the Moors; can you imagine the heath-covered ground shaking?
Hal’s quarry of red grouse is flushed and flies away while he stands rooted to the ground, hiding behind a rock and staring in awe.
Hal likened this giant being to an elm, and I have imagined that the Ent had been walking through an elm grove at some point in his wanderings; a trail of the papery, gold elm seed pods called “samaras” streams out from his beard in the wind.
J.R.R. Tolkien had the most wonderful possible imagination, and there is boundless joy to be had in trying to envision the scenes he describes. If you love the ents and the hobbits, you can celebrate them by hanging a museum-quality print of this original painting in your home. Invite imagination!
