“And Tuor looked down from the lowest terrace and saw, leaning against its wall among the stones and the sea-wrack, an Elf, clad in a grey cloak sodden with the sea. Silent, he sat, gazing beyond the ruin of the beaches out over the long ridges of the waves. All was still, and there was no sound save the roaring of the surf below.

A moment from now, the lone and shipwrecked Voronwë of the house of Fingolfin will turn his head and see the mighty figure of young Tuor upon Mount Taras beneath lost Vinyamar. The elf has been cast ashore, the sole survivor of a failed sea voyage to Valinor. His cloak is sodden, and his shining feet drag in the water, half-lost in Ulmo's realm. All must seem lost to him in this astounding moment from J.R.R. Tolkien's Unfinished Tales, but hope unlooked-for is about to appear.

Voronwë's cloak is clasped with a brooch bearing the insignia of Fingolfin, to whose house he belongs, making him one of the Noldor. 
He alone has been saved from the sea by Ulmo following the great shipwreck.
All about him there is sea wrack and campion and sea thrift as described by Professor Tolkien, and gulls wheel in the dawn.
Voronwë holds a sand dollar, etched by nature with the symbol of a star.
You can tell he is an elf because of the glow about his feet submerged beneath the water.
Upon the lowest slope of Mount Taras, Tuor stands in the magnificent raiment left for his coming by Turgon in the lofty halls of Vinyamar.
Tuor's spear points downward in the direction of a golden starfish, a token that his future will make him the father of Eärendil, who will succeed in reaching Valinor and obtaining forgiveness of the Valar for the rebellion of the elves; Eärendil will be set to sail the skies over Middle-earth as a star of hope for thousands of years.
A third character is present in this composition: the water. Given how Ulmo uses water as his medium to repeatedly guide Tuor on this journey, as well as the sea playing a role of barrier to those seeking Valinor at this time, I wanted the perspective of this painting to be from the water's viewpoint.
 
This is a scene of encouragement to endure even in the most difficult of times. We never know when some new hope may arise, as in the meeting of Tuor and Voronwë. Take heart!
