“...he gave him also three books of lore that he had made at various times, written in his spidery hand, and labeled on their red backs: Translations from the Elvish, by B.B.” - The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 6: Many Partings
Welcome to a library at Rivendell, where something historic is taking place. Beside Elrond sits little Bilbo, earnestly working on one of the red books labeled "Translations from the Elvish, by B.B." It is all thanks to Bilbo that we have major parts of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium because it was Mr. Baggins who first began writing down the Great Tales.
Things to notice about this painting:
- This room is filled with lore
- The stained glass window depicts a small part of Elrond's heritage. At top, Melian the Maia and Thingol meet in tree-tangled Middle-earth, as do Beren and Lúthien. Dior and Nimloth the White tarry by the waterfall, while Eärendil and Elwing stand upon the sea.
- The green-gold wall covering is woven of mallorn leaves, a token of Elrond's departed wife, Celebrían, daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel. You can see the same textile in the reception chamber of Celeborn and Galadriel.
- Pine and mountain motifs suggest the alpine setting of Imladris.
- The bookstand, studded with large gems, was made by the dwarves and may be older than the founding of Rivendell, perhaps stemming from the Second Age era in which the dwarves of Khazad-dûm fought side-by-side with the elves in Eregion.
- Gildor Inglorion stands in the foreground, a fond half-smile on his face as he listens to the little hobbit being tutored by Master Elrond.
If you love Professor Tolkien's own authoritative vision of Rivendell, as I do, I hope you will enjoy my efforts to continue the alpine aesthetic he derived from his visit to Switzerland. Little by little, I am working to depict many parts of Rivendell, and this painting is not only my tribute to Bilbo's authorship, but to Professor Tolkien, who devoted so much time to studying the elves and telling us about them. Celebrate the great lore by hanging a museum-quality print of this original, hand-done painting in your home.
