“Not the Gandalf who was responsible for so many quiet lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures? Anything from climbing trees to visiting elves - or sailing in ships, sailing to other shores!” - The Hobbit, Chapter I: An Unexpected Party
The three remarkable daughters of the Old Took have a small adventure with Gandalf, climbing a grand oak on a hill above their home at Great Smials in the Tookland. This original, hand-done painting captures many of the details about Gandalf as they are described by Bilbo in the opening pages of The Hobbit, including the facts that the Wandering Wizard was a close family friend of the Tooks and was known for leading both hobbit lads and lasses on adventures such as climbing trees.
Things to notice in your print:
- The year is 1282 in the Shire Reckoning, and Bilbo's future mother, Belladonna Took, is 30 years old. She stands at far right in the tree.
- Frodo's future grandmother, Mirabella Took, rests beside her older sister on a branch.
- Donnamira Took completes this trio of sisters. She sits at Gandalf's elbow listening in enchantment to Gandalf's famous fairy-tales about "...dragons and goblins and giants and the rescue of princesses and the unexpected luck of widows' sons," which are mentioned in The Hobbit.
- Gandalf is at his most relaxed and merriest. He considered the Shire to be a kind of private retreat and the trust and friendship he earned in the Tookland is betokened by the wreath of wildflowers the little lasses have placed on his hat.
- Gandalf is like a folk hero in the Shire, renowned for the fireworks he provides for the Old Took's Midsummer's Eve parties. This scene is set on one of his summer visits to the Westfarthing.
Though Professor Tolkien never had a chance to write a female hobbit adventure, the texts tell us that such events occurred. This would be a wonderful print to hang in a child's bedroom, playroom, school, or other setting in which young folk are being encouraged to use their gifts of imagination. A perfect gift for a hobbit birthday party, or for any reader who wants to celebrate the lovely lives of hobbit women.
