“No one had a more attentive audience than old Ham Gamgee, commonly known as the Gaffer. He held forth at The Ivy Bush, a small inn on the Bywater road; and he spoke with some authority, for he had tended the garden at Bag End for forty years, and had helped old Holman in the same job before that." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 1: A Long-Expected Party

Welcome to The Ivy Bush on the Bywater Road of the Shire! Here, Hamfast Gamgee (the Gaffer) is holding forth on the subject of why Mr. Bilbo Baggins is a real gentlehobbit. Tiny Daddy Twofoot listens with rapt interest, while Old Noakes enjoys his pipe across the table. The miller has his back to us. It's a small scene of the pleasantries of daily life around The Hill.

If you dream of getting to visit one of the hospitable inns in the Shire, hanging a print of this original, hand-done painting in your home can be a little token of your admiration of J.R.R. Tolkien's wonderful, atmospheric writing.

The Gaffer is 75 here, and life was good in Hobbiton and Bywater for elders. They had plenty of company, beautiful places to stroll, and the respect and support of their community. And, of course, hospitable places like The Ivy Bush were near at hand for socializing and refreshment.
