"Sam led him along several passages and down many steps and out into a high garden above the steep bank of the river. He found his friends sitting in a porch on the side of the house looking east. Shadows had fallen in the valley below, but there was still a light on the faces of the mountains far above. The air was warm. The sound of running and falling water was loud, and the evening was filled with a faint scent of trees and flowers, as if summer still lingered in Elrond's gardens." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 1: Many Meetings

This original painting depicts the lovely scene in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in which Sam leads a recovering Frodo from his bedchamber and through the High Garden at Rivendell. It is based with great care on Professor Tolkien’s own artwork, descriptions, and maps that offer a novel view of Imladris as seen looking west.

Things to notice in this Tolkien-inspired art print include:

    • Because we are behind the main building of the Last Homely House and looking west, we see a view of the east porch on which the Council of Elrond will soon take place.

    • Gandalf, Merry, and Pippin relax over their pipes on the porch, waiting for Sam to bring Frodo to them.

    • The music of the falls mingles with the music of Elrond’s silver harp - an instrument that is so dear to him that he will one day take it with him to Valinor.

    • The rider coming in at the garden gate is Glorfindel.

    • Elves stand on the balconies of the wooden house, admiring the sunset and the alpenglow.

    • Given Elrond’s status as a healer, there are many medicinal alpine herbs growing in his terraced garden.

    • Bilbo’s room, which you can see depicted here, is at the lower corner of the stone building next to the porch.

    • I have imagined that the small dining room in which Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves dine with Elrond in The Hobbit is located at the bottom of the smaller tower.

    • I also imagine that the Hall of Fire is located in the windowless portion of the larger tower.

    • Other spires rise out of the woodland beyond, taking into account that Rivendell once housed a great army of elves before the Last Alliance.

If you have ever been in a mountain setting at sunset, you know the beautiful colors that grace every surface in the changing light. I have hoped to capture the aweing peace of such settings, which Professor Tolkien must have experienced on his great trek through the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. I am so devoted to his own illustrations of Rivendell and have done my best to honor them here while providing a new angle from which to see this place of retreat. Imagine coming here for rest and healing.

By hanging this museum-quality art print in your home, you can provide your senses with a little retreat every time you contemplate the scene. It is a good thing to carry a little bit of the wisdom and tranquility of Rivendell in our hearts at all times.
