"'Listen to me, Durin's Folk!' I cried. 'If you persuade this Hobbit to join you, you will succeed. If you do not, you will fail. If you refuse even to try, then I have finished with you. You will get no more advice or help from me until the Shadow falls on you!"- "The Quest of Erebor", Unfinished Tales

Thorin Oakenshield and Gandalf's "more than chance" meeting at Bree convinces the wizard to journey west with the dwarf to his home under the Blue Mountains. If you have never seen these dwarven halls depicted before, there are so many details to enjoy in this original, hand-done painting based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Quest of Erebor" and related materials in Appendix A to The Lord of the Rings.

Things to notice in your print:

    • This reception chamber under the Blue Mountains has been skillfully hewn by the dwarves to reveal stunning crystal and stone that are lit by light shafts like those in the chamber of Mazarbul, with added light from dwarven rock crystal lamps.
    • The Blue Mountains are said to have been the awakening place of some of the dwarf-fathers.
    • Thorin sits upon a raven-capped, jewel-encrusted chair - a token of his longing for his throne under the Lonely Mountain. His beautiful golden harp is displayed on the dais.
    • His nephew, Fili, stands at his side. Balin and Dwalin sit at left, and Gloin sits at right with Bofur behind him.
    • Gandalf, known to the dwarves as Tharkûn, rebukes the grumbling dwarves, who do not like his suggestion of bringing a hobbit on their quest.
    • A flame leaps up in the brazier, bespeaking Gandalf's service to the Secret Fire as he warns the dwarves that their quest will fail if they disregard his advice.

"The Quest of Erebor" provides an outstanding, witty, and unforgettable backstory to The Hobbit, and deserves to be celebrated in the arts. If you are a lover of the deep lore, hanging this museum-quality print in your home can be your tribute to the genius with which Professor Tolkien labored to create complex layers of story and the "inner consistency of reality" in his works.
