This original, hand-done portrait was painted as a celebration of Christopher Tolkien's centenary. Born in 1924, Christopher devoted his life to the posthumous publication of the writings of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien. Without Christopher's work, the world would never have read The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, and so many other vital sources of lore and learning.
 
The dual portrait depicts an imagined moment in time in which father and son are in quiet converse together, and the viewer is invitied to daydream about the wonderful things they might hear if present in this book-lined room on a cozy afternoon. The vines beyond the window on the garden trellis hint at the root-and-branch relationship between Ronald and Christopher, while the gorgeous scarlet and gold curtain may call up the splendor of Smaug. It is a simple composition, but full of meaning for devoted Tolkien fans who are deeply grateful to both gentlemen for the immeasurable enrichment they have lavished on our lives.
