“All that day they walked about in the woods with him, singing, and laughing; for Quickbeam often laughed. He laughed if the sun came out from behind a cloud, he laughed if they came upon a stream or spring: then he stooped and splashed his feet and head with water; he laughed sometimes at some sound or whisper in the trees. Whenever he saw a rowan-tree he halted awhile with his arms stretched out and sang and swayed as he sang.” - The Two Towers, Book III, Chapter 4: Treebeard

Who among us does not long to communicate more closely with the natural world? Merry and Pippin’s rambles with Quickbeam during Entmoot have always filled me with a buoyant, lighthearted joy because J.R.R. Tolkien has managed to make an ancient human dream very nearly real in this scene. The little hobbits get to learn at the great feet of the ents, to see how lively Bregalad is moved to song and dance by the sight of a rowan tree; perhaps they even learn to sway with him for the pure delight of being in harmony with the trees.

This original, hand done painting is one of my most whimsical to date. I hope you can feel the wind in the trees, and learn, like Meriadoc and Peregrin, that great forests are full of both beauty and power. Below, Entmoot is underway, and smoke is rising from Isengard in the distance. Soon, very soon, the ents will begin their march to overcome the mind of metal and wheels.

If you are a cherisher of nature, and a sharer in the ents’ conviction that trees have lives and rights that must be protected, hanging this print in your home may inspire you to greatness in your environmental work. I find it essential to contemplate that Merry and Pippin escape from the orcs, recover from their ordeal, and find consolation in doing ent-work. We, too, have long legs and useful hands, and can lift our voices to restore the beauty of the green world.
