I made a personal discovery while doing research for this painting, which is largely based on a photograph by Pamela Chandler. The online versions I could see of the picture were black and white and somewhat dim, but it was an absolute thrill to spot a little topiary tree growing beside the door of the house - just like the ones Professor Tolkien repeatedly drew in the door-yard of Bag End. Truly, the Professor was a hobbit in all but size!
I've also done my best to work from photographic clues in depicting the garden. There is a hydrangea, what looks to my eyes like a small spruce, and I have added nasturtians for Bilbo's sake. While I could not identify the exact roses from black and white pictures, I chose varieties that would have been available and popular in the mid-century. There is a Dainty Bess behind Edith, an Alistair Stella Grey behind Ronald, and an Aglaya rambler overhead. I hope you enjoy seeing this devoted couple so happy in their garden, true to hobbit form.
