“Peregrin Took marries Diamond of Long Cleeve.” - Appendix B to The Lord of the Rings, "Later Events Concerning the Members of the Fellowship of the Ring" for year 1427, Shire Reckoning
You are cordially invited to the wedding feast of Peregrin Took of Great Smials and Diamond of Long Cleeve! This union referenced in Appendix B to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is truly a cause for celebration. This is a scene of the peace which the Fellowship won for Middle-earth and which the hobbits won for the Shire. If you've always wanted to have a hobbit wedding, or at least attend one, you'll find lots of inspiration here.
Though Professor Tolkien never described the particulars of a hobbit marriage ceremony, I think we are on firm ground in supposing they would have had a memorable celebration with feasting, music, dancing, and merriment. If you bring home a museum-quality print of this original hand-done painting, here are details of this hobbit wedding reception you will enjoy noticing:
- Hobbit women tended never to grow taller than 3 feet in height, thus, Pippin and Merry tower above their wives and all their guests, thanks to drinking the ent-draughts when they were in Fangorn Forest.
- Merry Brandybuck and his wife, Estella Bolger, are at the bride and groom's right, and Merry is holding his small son, whose name we do not know.
- Samwise Gamgee and his wife, Rose Cotton, are at the bride and groom's left, and their smallest child is baby Rose at this time. Their eldest child, Elanor, dances to the tune of the fiddler, while little Frodo is enchanted by the tune of the whistler. It is moving to think that Frodo is in some way present on this day of his friend's and cousin's happiness, at least in the presence of his namesake.
- The guests dance out of a feasting tent, much like the ones at Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday party. They make their way into an archway of laburnum and lilies - the two flowers to which Bilbo once compared Gandalf's fireworks.
- The wedding is taking place at Long Cleeve, home of the bride, and also home of one of the most famous figures in hobbit history, Bandobras "The Bullroarer" Took.
I hope you share my joy in seeing the Shire at peace after the War of the Ring, and that it is a pleasure to be part of this momentous day on which heroic young Peregrin Took begins his future life with his bride.
