"Learn now the lore of Living Creatures!" - The Two Towers, Book 3, Chapter 4: Treebeard

If nature is one of the great loves of your heart, then the old lists of the ents are music to your ears. When Treebeard begins reciting a roll-call of the diverse nature of Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, it fills in so many wonderful details of the rich environment. Museum-quality prints of this original painting celebrate each of the beings mentioned by Treebeard as he strolls about Fangorn Forest with Merry and Pippin in his arms.

Things to notice about this painting:

    • Treebeard is one of the oldest beings on earth in the Third Age of Men; his lore is ancient, and I hoped to convey how hearing him speak might have brought the forest to vivid life for the little hobbits, who stare about themselves in wonder.

    • Can you spot the elf in this picture? Good eyes!

    • The man on horseback in the far distance is a Rider of Rohan.

    • Wood anemones beautify the forest floor at this season of the year.

I think it’s so important to remember that far more than just the fate of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth is at stake in the War of the Ring. Every goodly animal and plant needed to be freed from purposed domination in order to thrive. Merry and Pippin’s idyll amongst the ents is something I’m sure they never forgot, and if you are a person who prizes a sincere closeness to nature, hanging this print in your home can be a constant and beautiful reminder of what you love.
