“The smallest host and the first to set forth was led by Ingwë, the most high lord of all the elvish race. He entered Valinor and sits at the feet of the Powers, and all the elves revere his name; but he never came back, nor looked again upon Middle-earth. The Vanyar were his people; they are the Fair Elves, the beloved of Manwë and Varda, and few among Men have spoken with them…as the ages passed the Vanyar grew to love the land of the Valar and the full light of the Trees…and dwelt thereafter upon the mountain of Manwë, or about the plains and woods of Valinor…” - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion
If your heart is yearning for a sanctuary of peace and beauty, there are few passages more blissful in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion than those which speak of the Vanyar. They are perfectly contented to dwell in the Blessed Realm once they reach its shores.
Things to notice in this painting:
In The Lord of the Rings, Treebeard reveals that the elves began waking up the trees in Middle-earth; here we see the golden-haired Vanyar in a wood in Valinor communicating with the birches.
The elves have clad themselves in raiment meant to honor the trees and show that they reverence their beauty; their garb is meant as a token of friendship for the trees.
Ingwë, high king of all the elves, stands in the foreground, listening with respect and tenderness to one of the trees.
By the stream, an elf plays a harp of gold while all the host sings; such harps will be brought to Eärendil when he arrives in Aman.
Beside the harper, an elf-maid lovingly cares for a sapling – few things are more delicate than new-sprouted trees.
All the elves bask in the distant silver and gold light of the Two Trees.
Though we learn far more about other branches of the elves, the sublime Vanyar are free from struggle and strife. No promise of power or self-aggrandizement can lure them away from the higher things of Valinor. By hanging a museum-quality print of this original, hand-done painting, you can not only celebrate the beauty of Professor Tolkien’s glorious subcreation, but also may find that looking at this scene helps you rest your mind in thoughts of tranquility. May light and hope be yours.
