"I will take your gift, O Bilbo the Magnificent!" said the king gravely. "And I name you elf-friend and blessed..." - The Hobbit, Chapter XVIII, The Return Journey

Sometimes, Tolkien's famous theme of consolation comes in the form of a consolation prize! Bilbo offers the Elvenking Thranduil a necklace of silver and pearls as an "I'm sorry" for having burgled his food and drink while the dwarves were captive in Mirkwood. This is the necklace which Bilbo received from Dain, and it is an excellent example of the hobbit's lack of greed; he gives away this magnificent object as freely as he might bestow a mathom on his birthday.

In return, Bilbo receives the honorific title "elf-friend" with the blessings of Thranduil, connecting this sparkling scene to the larger legendarium. A generation later, Bilbo's heir will be repeatedly recognized as an elf-friend, as he undertakes his own quest.

Things to notice in this painting:

    • Despite their recent losses in the Battle of the Five Armies, the company is of good cheer, and looking forward to a spring of more peace
    • Beorn sings and laughs all along the "back again" journey, keeping the travelers merry
    • If you look into the misty distance of his autumnal scene, you will glimpse the prominence under which lies the Elvenking's hall
    • Legolas holds the reins of his father's steed

By hanging your print of this original, hand done painting in your home, you will have a portal to deep Tolkien Faërie whenever you need it, as well as a nice reminder that generosity makes you like Bilbo - an elf-friend!
