“'I thought I saw a white figure that shone and did not grow dim like the others. Was that Glorfindel then?'

'Yes, you saw him for a moment as he is upon the other side: one of the mighty of the Firstborn. He is an Elf-lord of a house of princes.'" - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 1: Many Meetings

In what must be one of the most spiritually uplifting glimpses of glory which J.R.R. Tolkien gives us in The Lord of the Rings, this original hand-done painting depicts Frodo's view of Glorfindel through the crest of a great wave - a being shining with light. As Gandalf later explains to the convalescing hobbit, he was vouchsafed a vision of the great, re-embodied Elf-lord "as he is upon the other side."

Things to notice when you bring your print home:

    • Glorfindel looks with majestic compassion at Frodo through the curl of a great wave before everything goes dark for the little hobbit upon the opposite bank of the River Bruinen.
    • As the wave curls over, you can see it breaking into the white horses and one of the shining white riders, which Gandalf added to the flood to sweep away the enemies.
    • In the far distance, the red flaming brands of Aragorn, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are just visible in the gathering grey.

Glorfindel is like a living eucatastrophe. He is the elf whom Tolkien called "almost angelic". While Galadriel may have been the most powerful of the elves left in the late Third Age, I believe that Glorfindel bore the most sub-created holiness, and this glimpse of his true nature is simply unforgettable.
