“You are indeed high in the favour of the Lady! For she and her maidens wove this stuff; and never before have we clad strangers in the garb of our own people." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 8: Farewell to Lorien
Some of the greatest beauty in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings exists on the borders of the epic tale. He gives us the merest glimpse of the existence of Galadriel and her weavers, and this painting has been created to let you imagine the wonder of such a sight in greater detail.
Bring home a museum-quality print to enjoy these details:
- Tall Galadriel pauses at the center of the scene as she walks amongst her weavers on a large flet high in a mallorn tree.
- It is the time of green leaves and golden flowers in Lothlórien; the Fellowship doesn't get to see the wood in this season, but you can with this painting.
- I have carefully based my rendering of the mallorn on Professor Tolkien's textual description, artwork, and much research into a combination of the features of Primary World trees, which, taken altogether, create the closest approximation to a mallorn that I can achieve.
- Some of the weavers are weaving the grey cloth from which the cloaks are made that are given as gifts to the Fellowship, others are drying a fair gauze-like textile for elven raiment, still others are processing large twists of fibers which will eventually become the glimmering hithlain rope, and one weaver is working on a panel of green cloth I supposed might be part of a gift for Galadriel's granddaughter, Arwen, in Rivendell.
- A harper is perched amongst the branches, providing music for the weavers, and I do not doubt that this group would sometimes have sung while at their work.
You can read a fuller description of my research into mellyrn characteristics in this blog post, and I sincerely hope you will enjoy the video capturing the development of this painting.
Tolkien's genius in creating richness and depth in Middle-earth in a single paragraph or even a few lines means that there are always fresh views to be had from a close reading. You may never have seen Galadriel and her weaving maidens depicted before in the arts, and if you find elven beauty uplifting, this could be a print that gives you joyful inspiration each day in your home.
