“There was a big book with plain red leather covers; its tall pages were now almost filled. At the beginning there were many leaves covered with Bilbo's thin wandering hand; but most of it was written in Frodo's firm flowing script." - The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 9: The Grey Havens
Though we think of J.R.R. Tolkien as the author of The Lord of the Rings, his own tradition was that he was merely the translator of this masterpiece written by Frodo Baggins near the end of his days in Middle-earth. It is a rainy June morning in S.R. 1420, and you are in the study at Bag End witnessing Frodo in the very act of writing what we have come to call The Lord of the Rings.
Bring home a museum-quality print of this painting to enjoy all of these details up close:
- It is about six weeks after the wedding of Sam Gamgee and Rose Cotton. Frodo has invited the couple to live with him at Bag End, and they are taking tenderest care of him. Rose polishes the windows and Sam appears with tea and scones the minute Mr. Frodo's cup is empty.
- Though Bag End is habitable once more following the depredations of the ruffians, the grounds will take longer to put in good order. The normally clear view from the window is obstructed by an overgrown hedge. The vases in the room hold wildflowers instead of cultivated varieties. There are bee orchids, purple loosestrife, knapweed, burnet, buttercups, and wild carrot. The dandelion on Sam's tray is meant as a little joke to cheer his master.
- Frodo is not well. He wears Queen Evenstar's jewel around his neck, and his right hand is missing its third finger. Unless Frodo was left-handed, learning to write again in his beautiful script must have added great labor to the recording of his epic tale.
- Bilbo's presence is also felt in this room. We not only see the three books of lore he gave Frodo at Rivendell, but above the hearth there is a map of Bilbo's favorite walks, and in the reading nook, there is a small mural of beloved Imladris.
- I have also incorporated a token of Professor Tolkien in this scene, in honor of his translation. The smoking pipe in the bowl on the desk is a detail I have noticed in photographs from the Professor's own study.
Have you ever wondered why Frodo spent his last days writing The Lord of the Rings? I've come to see it as a work of hope for the future, and as we know, Fourth Age hobbits did become more interested in lore. I hope it is a comfort to see the heroic but ailing Frodo being so well-cared for by the Gamgees. If The Lord of the Rings has a special meaning in your life, I'd be honored to have you hang this print in your home as a reminder of the wonderful tale that was left to us by Frodo Baggins and by J.R.R. Tolkien.
