“‘And I will choose you companions to go with you as far as they will or fortune allows…the Company of the Ring shall be Nine.’” - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 3: The Ring Goes South

This original, hand done painting celebrates and memorializes some of the last days in which the Fellowship is together, floating down the Great River before chance and misadventure separate them. Through journeying with the Company of the Ring appointed by Elrond, we readers are gifted with a wealth of experiences of fellowship. There is Sam’s matchless devotion to Frodo, and also the hobbits’ enduring companionship through thick and thin. There is the bittersweet service of Boromir, who will fall to the temptation of the Ring, but who will redeem himself by sacrificing his life for the safety of Merry and Pippin. And there is Aragorn, who guides the journey from Bree to the banks of the Anduin, and without whom the hobbits would have been alone in a world of fearsome foes.

But of all the partnerships J.R.R. Tolkien treats us to amongst the Company, it is the friendship of Gimli and Legolas that may best exemplify fellowship in its truest sense. The long history of war, mistrust, and estrangement between elves and dwarves is overcome victoriously by the bonds forged between these unlikely traveling companions. In Lothlórien, we see the prejudice and suspicion that divides these two ancient kindreds from one another, but the lived experience of Legolas and Gimli, walking, riding, rowing and fighting side-by-side for one another and for Frodo, undoes Ages of enmity. After the destruction of the Ring, they remain together, visiting the Glittering Caves and Fangorn, unwilling to part.

It is a powerful lesson for our own times; the fellowship of Gimli and Legolas can be a kind of talisman against any force that seeks to divide neighbors, who might otherwise join hands for the good of all.

It was a great challenge and honor to portray Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli, Legolas, Pippin, Merry, Frodo and Sam all together in their shared boats on their shared journey towards eucatastrophe. Prints of this painting would make a meaningful gift for anyone in your life who is devoted to The Lord of the Rings and all of its unforgettable characters, lessons, and inspirations.
