“They went along the lane, until they saw the thatched roofs of a large house and farm-buildings peeping out among the trees ahead. The Maggots, and the Puddifoots of Stock, and most of the inhabitants of the Marish, were house-dwellers; and his farm was stoutly built of brick and had a high wall all round it." - The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 4: A Short Cut to Mushrooms
Meet Farmer Maggot, and welcome to Bamfurlong in the Marish! If you've never seen this doughty hobbit farmer depicted before, I hope it's a joy to arrive at his farm at sundown with Frodo, Sam, and Pippin in this warm and unforgettable scene from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. There's so much to see here!
Things you'll notice in your print:
- The Marish is a water-rich area, filled with ditches and dykes, and Farmer Maggot's thatched brick farmhouse stands in a little grove of ash trees, which are common in reclaimed marshland.
- Little mushrooms grow in the grass, and turnips, cabbages, and other hearty crops are cultivated in the spacious fields where the family and farmhands are finishing up work at sundown.
- Mrs. Maggot is already at work in her warm farm kitchen, preparing a "mighty dish of mushrooms and bacon."
- Sam is alarmed by Wolf, but Pippin is at ease with Grip, while Fang stands loyally by, perhaps smelling the delicious scent of supper on the evening breeze.
- Frodo looks a little self-conscious, having visited Bamfurlong in his youth to pilfer its famous mushrooms, but Farmer Maggot offers him the heartiest possible welcome.
- A little bit of mystery surrounds Farmer Maggot. He's so stouthearted that he sends a black rider away from his property, and he is the chosen friend of Tom Bombadil - one of the most mysterious beings in all of Middle-earth.
- Given the safety and help Farmer Maggot provides to the traveling hobbits, I have come to think of this episode as one of those important "more than chance" meetings in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Hobbit farms are the center of their society, and Farmer Maggot exemplifies both strength and hospitality, rooted in closeness to the earth. By hanging a museum-quality print of this wonderful scene at Bamfurlong in your home, you can celebrate the virtues that make hobbits so beloved.
