“And on the day of the New Year of the Elves, Celeborn and Thranduil met in the midst of the forest; and they renamed Mirkwood Eryn Lasgalen, The Wood of Greenleaves." - The Lord of the Rings, Appendix B: The Tale of Years

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, the Elvenking Thranduil meets with Lord Celeborn of the Galadhrim to re-name Mirkwood Eryn Lasgalen: The Wood of Greenleaves. This is an historic meeting, and given Professor Tolkien's love of trees, depicts what may be one of the greatest victories Frodo and his friends won for Middle-earth, healing the wood from domination.

Bring home a museum-quality print to enjoy these fine details:

    • The Wood-elves are a merry folk, arriving with harp and song, and splendid in the natural colors they love, set off with sparkling gems.
    • The Galadhrim are more dreamy, clad in white and garlanded in mallorn leaves from their home in Lothlórien.
    • Both Thranduil and Celeborn are heavily armed with both swords and bows; though the War of the Ring is over, there may still be spiders and orcs about in the forest they are rescuing from the state of domination it fell under in Third Age 1050 due to the presence of the Enemy.
    • The scope of this ecological victory cannot be overstated, for the Wood of Greenleaves is the largest sylvan environment in western Middle-earth.
    • Observant eyes may notice that the elves have walked into a ring of stone - this is my own nod to traditions like the fairy-rings of Ireland in which important things may have happened in ancientry; mortals do not enter these places, but the elves are at home there because they are a part of the Perilous Realm.

If you are especially fond of seeing seldom-glimpsed scenes from Tolkien's legendarium, this enchanting meeting could be one you wish to celebrate and tell others the story of by hanging the print in your home.
