“A cleft has opened in the pitiless walls of the world, and we are invited to follow our great Captain inside. The following Him is, of course, the essential point...it may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbour. The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbour's glory should be laid on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it...” - C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Following his adult conversion, C.S. Lewis attended church at Holy Trinity in Oxford for many years, and this portrait was painted as a Lenten devotion in celebration of the author's immense theological gifts to the world. His fiction and apologetics are credited by many as essential stepping stones along their own walk with the Christian faith. Holy Trinity is a place of pilgrimage for C.S. Lewis readers who journey there to honor his burial place.

Not long ago, it was common for people to display ornamental busts depicting historic figures they found to be inspiring. This portrait is offered as a way to create imagery of encouragement on the walls of any home.

    Details about this museum-quality print:

    • The cypress vine (also known as Star of Bethlehem) behind Lewis is a reference to the fire flowers from which Lucy's healing elixir was made in The Chronicles of Narnia.
    • The plain interior window speaks to how Lewis found light through the church after a long and vigorous personal struggle.
    • Lewis doffs his hat and holds out a hand, inviting an unseen fellow church-goer in the door of Holy Trinity in Oxford. This is my way of representing the openness of his invitation to readers to consider Christianity through both his fiction and apologetics. His "supposal" about Aslan, in particular, has spoken to generations of readers of all ages. He offers a very warm welcome.
    • Holy Trinity Church was built in 1848, and is the burial site of C.S. Lewis, making it a place of heartfelt pilgrimage. You can see very fine footage of this lovely church in one of my favorite films, The Most Reluctant Convert.

This portrait was debuted in conjunction with "J.R.R. Tolkien at St. Aloysius, Oxford". By displaying both pieces side-by-side as a diptych, viewers can see that the two men are looking at one another while going about their parallel but distinct devotions. As a painter of J.R.R. Tolkien's life and works, I felt called to depict C.S. Lewis, who credited his Catholic friend with vital assistance towards his own conversion to Anglicanism. Tolkien's theology was truly wise and resonated deeply with Lewis. Without the willingness of both men to reject the ecumenical barriers of their era, readers would never have been blessed with Lewis' fiction and apologetics. Simultaneously, Tolkien credited Lewis with the encouragement he needed to bring his own legendarium to publication.

Christians of many denominations consider C.S. Lewis to be one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century. If you have been inspired by his writings, may this print be a quiet daily reminder of your faith.
