"But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar."- The Silmarillion, Chapter 19: "Of Beren and Lúthien"
How great a thing it is to know that after all the storm and stress caused by the Silmarils, "Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar." This line from "Of Beren and Lúthien" never fails to stop me in my reading for a moment, to absorb the deep peace of this knowledge. The elves are so caught up in the War of the Jewels, and utterly devastating things happen to so many of them, but Tolkien assures us that Galadriel's brother and father are fine, in the end.
This is a painting about the consolation Tolkien had faith in and offered again and again to readers of his magnificent books. It is a scene of peace and beauty after much turmoil. Compared to Middle-earth, we know rather little about the flora of Valinor, though we, of course, know there were forests there. Here, I have chosen two specific flowers which spangle the grass. Starry loosestrife not only reminds me of the elves' love of stars, but its name has always evoked for me something like letting go of stress. Angelica, meanwhile, is associated with sweetness and angels. I felt these flowers were fitting for the Blessed Realm.
If this is a painting that would give you encouragement and hope for better things ahead, I would be honored to have you bring home a museum-quality print.
