“The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command.” - The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 1: The Tower of Cirith Ungol
In his humility, Sam is protected from the lures of the Ring by his modest wish for a small garden. The word "garden" carries the meaning of guarding in its philological roots, and it turns out that Sam's wishes protect him from the Ring. He also receives a wonderfully happy fairy-tale ending in that he winds up having what might be the most magnificent garden in all the Shire. This is my portrayal of what you would see if you climbed to the top of the mallorn tree in the Party Field and looked northwest towards Bag End to admire its gardens in Sam's day.
Things to notice if you bring home your museum-quality print:
- Closest to the smial, Sam has planted a large vegetable garden and fruit orchard to feed his rapidly-growing family.
- There is a rose garden for Rose to take her ease in, and clover-filled lawns and flower gardens as places for the couple's children to play.
- A pair of full-grown cypress trees echo the dooryard topiaries old Mr. Bilbo loved.
- Hobbit skill with earthen works has enabled Sam to further terrace The Hill for improved drainage, and he even has little toolsheds delved into the retaining walls.
- In the foreground, Sam has taken bricks left over from the destruction of the horrible mill and the refurbishment of New Row to build a warm sunken garden; here, he is cultivating some of the rare and wonderful herbs he saw in Ithilien.
- Being a devoted father, Sam is teaching his little son Frodo all he knows about tending the green world hobbits love.
If you, too, love the green world and gardens, hanging this print in your home can be a daily reminder of your hobbit priorities. I can't imagine any better way of living.
