“In fact he was just sitting down to a nice little second breakfast in the dining-room by the open window, when in walked Gandalf.” - The Hobbit, Chapter 2: Roast Mutton
Take a seat at the table for a nice little second breakfast with Bilbo Baggins, who has no idea that he is about to begin his great adventure. At one elbow sits the big hospitable teapot, as generous and homely as the Baggins side of Bilbo. At the other elbow, a good pot of mustard for that bit of Tookish spice, which Gandalf so wisely recognized in our hobbit. And, to fill in the corners, we have warm muffins, wild strawberries, tarts, seed cake, and a mighty dish of mushrooms.
Tolkien readers often ask each other where they would go if they could visit any part of Middle-earth. For me, the answer has always been the Shire. The hobbits’ love of cheer and food and flowers exactly suits me. The comforts of Bag End, the beauty of the Shire, and the goodness of the hobbits are, to me, the most deeply-felt of all the many reasons why Middle-earth is so worth saving.
And while this illustration can simply remind you of the comforts of Middle-earth, it can also be a source of reflection on how the hand of Eru Ilúvatar is at work behind even such a simple scene as this. Bilbo’s Took-ish courage in The Hobbit will lead to Frodo’s bravery in The Lord of The Rings and the destruction of the Ring for the sake of all good folk.
Prints of this painting of Bilbo Baggins’ second breakfast could look beautiful in your kitchen, dining room or breakfast nook, and would make a heartfelt gift to the best cooks you know, to your favorite foodies, or to any Tolkien art fans.
