“Often long after the hobbits were wrapped in sleep they would sit together under the stars, recalling the ages that were gone and all their joys and labours in the world, or holding counsel, concerning the days to come. If any wanderer had chanced to pass, little would he have seen or heard, and it would have seemed to him only that he saw grey figures, carved in stone, memorials of forgotten things now lost in unpeopled lands. For they did not move or speak with mouth, looking from mind to mind; and only their shining eyes stirred and kindled as their thoughts went to and fro.” - The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 6: Many Partings

The Third Age is ending, and the elves and Maiar like Gandalf are departing Middle-earth, but on this westward journey, J.R.R. Tolkien gives us this remarkable pause in time. Gandalf, Galadriel, Celeborn, and Elrond gather under the stars to communicate in thought via the practice known as Ósanwe. Their memories reach back thousands of years, through passages of incredible peril and joy. Gandalf has existed almost since the beginning, and the collective experiences of the elves present span all the ages that have led up to this breathtaking moment in The Lord of the Rings.

If you bring home a print of this original hand-painted work, you will notice three significant elements it contains. For Elrond and his ring, Vilya, the air is stirring and blowing leaves from the beech trees. For Galadriel’s ring, Nenya, a stream flows nearby. And for Gandalf’s ring, Narya, we see a bright fire, symbolic of his status as a servant of the Secret Fire. For generations of Men, these rings of power were employed to protect much that was good in Middle-earth until the final destruction of the One Ring. When you look at this painting, I hope the thought of the long lives of service lived by Gandalf and the elves will communicate itself to you, and give you endurance, courage, and hope.
